Oral Cancer Screening at Yonge & Eglinton

Oral cancer is a term that can refer to cancer of the lips, tongue, jaw, cheeks, upper and lower mouth tissue and throat. While Oral Cancer is not as often mentioned in the media as many other forms of cancer, it is just as common as Leukemia and has claimed more lives than skin cancer. Until the last decade, the highest risk demographic for oral cancers were men aged 40 and up. However, recent evidence has shown oral cancer in both young men and women has been on the rise. This can be linked to lifestyle changes including increased population of female tobacco users and those suffering from HPV.

Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer:
During the early stages, oral cancer can include changes in the colour of tissue, the appearance of small canker-like soars or bites on the inside of the cheek. Oral cancer is tricky because many of these symptoms are shared by oral conditions that are totally harmless. It is important for a dentist to examine any symptoms that may appear to be sure that they are not signs of something serious.

Oral Cancer Screening:
Not unlike most cancers, early detection and treatment can greatly improve the prognosis and recovery rates of those affected. If symptoms are discovered and managed early, oral cancer survival rates can be as high as 90%. Unfortunately, all too often oral cancers go undetected until the later stages, which is why we make it an important part of your routine dental exam.

At Delta Dental, we use Velscope, a non-invasive oral cancer-screening device that uses fluorescence visualization technology to identify pre-cancerous lesions during screening exams. Velscope aids in detecting any abnormalities that are not visible to the naked eye while making the procedure painless, safe, and swift.

If you’re experiencing any of the following, call Dr. Jecu for an examination:
  • a sore in your mouth lasting more than two weeks
  • any discoloured tissue inside the mouth (often white or dark red) that lasts more than two weeks
  • a lump in your cheek, lips, gums, tongue or mouth’s soft tissue
  • a lump in your neck
  • difficulty or pain when speaking, chewing, or swallowing
  • a sore throat or hoarse voice that lasts for a prolonged period
  • numbness in your mouth or face
